Role boundary
I was not a core developer of the browser engine. My task was to assess whether the existing benchmark supported its performance and release claims.
Audit method
I built Debug and Release variants, ran the smoke profile, inspected output fields and cross-run variation, checked platform support, and mapped the evidence to predefined release gates.
The review asked whether there was a comparative baseline, whether macOS captured real CPU and memory metrics, whether concurrency was covered, whether variance supported regression claims, and whether summary reports exposed failures.
Main findings
The benchmark lacked horizontal comparison, macOS resource metrics were incomplete, concurrency was absent, and high variation weakened some regression conclusions. Under the nine formal gates used in the audit, eight were not yet publish-ready.
That does not prove the engine is incapable. It means the available evidence could not support a stronger release statement.
Why it belongs here
Evaluation engineering is not just running a script. It requires separating product performance, measurement-system behavior, and environment noise, even when the honest result is less impressive.
